Freshly Picked:
Free Fruit Trees From Tree People

Wrigley Village Community Garden has an orchard! A very heartfelt thank you to Steve Hofvendahl and Valerie Jones of Tree People for donating 50 fruit trees. The fruit trees will be planted in 5 out of 6 (1st and Elm Community Garden is at capacity) Long Beach Organic Inc. operated community gardens.

L to R: Moi, Steve Hofvendahl of Tree People, Volunteers Steve and Tony, and Joe Corso of Long Beach Organic Inc.

Tree People’s mission is to inspire, engage and support people to take personal responsibility for the urban environment, making it safe, healthy, fun and sustainable and to share the process as a model for the world. I can get down with that!

We received 5 of each of the following: Fantasia Nectarine, Burgundy Plum, Donut White Peach, Katy Apricot and Dorsett Golden Apple. Citrus varieties included: Algerian Clementine, Bearss Lime, Torocco Blood Orange, Washington Navel Orange and Eureka Lemon.

Like vegetables, fruit is an essential part of a healthy diet but produce can be expensive. I’ve seen flats of Cuties California Mandarins for $6.99. It’s no wonder why I see more kids with Flaming Hot Cheetos in their hand rather than an orange.

Through a community orchard gardeners and residents will have access to organic fruit as early as this summer.

About Fruit Tree Program: Tree People has always connected communities with trees. In 1984, distributing fruit trees to low-income communities in Los Angeles became an important part of this mission. Since then, we’ve distributed more than 90,000 fruit trees to be planted in backyards, on school campuses and in community gardens throughout L.A. County.

In January 2010, 9,000 trees will be distributed from locations in the South Bay, the San Fernando Valley and East Los Angeles. As always, we look to qualified community and faith-based groups, schools and public orchards to help us reach individuals or groups who may otherwise be unable to obtain fresh fruit or fruit trees.

Registration for the 2010 Fruit Tree Program is closed but you can visit their website for more information.
