Culinary Gardens for an Urban Environment
My earliest memories of gardening include strolling and foraging through my grandmother’s tiny but bountiful garden. She grew abnormally tall chili shrubs and robust cilantro hedges. She took these and other ingredients from her garden and created delicious meals for her family. I was fascinated.
My mother encouraged my new found gardening hobby and cleared space in her garden just for me. Hobby quickly turned into passion and I’ve been cultivating edibles and ornamental flowers ever since.
Today, I grow in a modest backyard and community garden plot; mostly in raised garden beds made of upcycled wood and hand-built by my husband. Colorful edibles are tucked amongst ornamentals in garden beds and a variety of citrus grow in containers.
Fruits and vegetables are grown organically and sustainably. Soil is cultivated with compost and green manures, and solid cultural practices like crop rotation and natural pest remedies are implemented.
Anarchy in the Garden home edition, offers affordable professionally built custom raised beds and expert home garden consultation to fellow backyard micro urban farmies interested in creating their own home based culinary vegetable plot.
Based on the fundamental belief that organic home urban gardening increases food security and empowers individuals to take back control of their food supply Anarchy in the Garden home edition will help backyard urban farmers to set up organic high yield vegetable gardens for residences and then teach fellow home urban farm enthusiasts how to maintain these gardens.
Along with bragging rights to growing the best tomatoes on the block additional benefits to backyard urban gardening include the empowerment of individuals to make a meaningful impact on global environment issues by reducing the negative ecological footprint of the fossil fuel powered transported food supplies from across the country and world.
